Alessandro Galesi

PhD Candidate, CEMFI

I am a Ph.D. candidate in economics at the Center of Monetary and Financial Studies (CEMFI), Madrid. My research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of macro-financial linkages, as well as the determinants of the latest US jobless recovery. One of my current works is a joint paper with Claudio Michelacci where we analyze the role of households’ financial conditions for the current recession and recovery in the US. In this context we study the role of “Make it in America” policies, introduced by the current US administration, which are aimed at supporting the manufacturing sector. We ask two questions: first, are “Make it in America” policies justified? And how the Great Recession would have looked like if the US government had not subsidized the manufacturing sector? My research also covers the development of new macroeconometric techniques. Together with Vanessa Smith, I developed the GVAR Toolbox v1.1 (2011), which is a set of routines for estimating Global Vector Autoregressive (GVAR) models, which is freely downloadable (http://www-cfap.jbs.cam.ac.uk/research/gvartoolbox/index.html). I have also some publications in which I apply the GVAR methodology which were the result of collaborations with ECB and IMF staff. I completed my undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Pisa in 2008, where I majored in macroeconomics and econometrics.
