EABCN-Banque de France Joint Conference on

Advances in causal inference for macroeconomic policies

16-17 April 2026

Hosted by the Banque de France, Paris

Submission Deadline: 5 pm GMT, Wednesday 31 December 2025

The Banque de France and the Euro Area Business Cycle Network are organizing a two-day workshop on recent advances in causal inference for macroeconomic policies. Causal inference is central to macroeconomic policymaking, yet it is challenging and remains largely uncertain.

The conference will cover topics including, but not limited to:

  • new methods for reliable causal inference,
  • High-frequency identification,
  • Identification based on higher moments,
  • inference for counterfactual policies,
  • estimation of structural parameters in policy evaluation,
  • machine learning-based approaches to causal estimation.

The keynote speaker will be Regis Barnichon (San Francisco Fed and CEPR).

The organizers welcome submissions of completed papers on theoretical and empirical aspects of the question. Applications on monetary policy using euro area data are particularly encouraged.

Organisers
Stéphane Lhuissier, Banque de France
Adrian Penalver, Banque de France
Barbara Rossi, EUI and ICREA-Universitat Pompeu Fabra, BSE, CREI (on leave)
Arthur Saint Guilhem, Banque de France and European Central Bank
